Pocket Houses exhibit qualities of excellence through the professional collaboration and partnership between the public and private sectors. The use of high-quality building materials and energy saving devices and construction
help to set Pocket Houses apart from
other affordable housing developments
less focused on contributing towards
sustainable neighbourhoods. Their
design also demonstrates excellence
though the creation of a model accepted
by the community and integrated into
older single-family neighbourhoods.

The basic floor plans
of the new units are featured in
supplementary material section.
The benefits of this project include:
community involvement though
consultation, expanded partnerships
between non-profits and private
companies, neighbourhood revitalization,
and increasing the housing options for
single residents. A recently submitted funding proposal to the Canada
Mortgage and Housing Corporation will
allow for a post-occupancy evaluation
involving tenants, neighbours, and
property managers to help fully quantify
the extent of the project’s effectiveness.

The Pocket House project involved SAM
Management, ND LEA Inc, Cohlemyer
Architects, the City of Winnipeg, and
community stakeholders and local
resident associations. This represented
a true collaboration between the
public and private sectors in helping
to address a specific housing need
often overlooked in the private housing
market. This model can be a template
for affordable infill housing aimed in
single resident occupancies in innercity neighbourhoods. This project
makes an impact on the profession by
demonstrating the important role that
planners can play in delivering affordable
housing for low income singles and
helping to solve one of Canada’s most
pressing urban issues.
